Students on the GO! is a program designed to train high school students to run or walk (or a combination of both!) the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon each April. Students embark on a personal journey of self-discovery where they explore and experience the lifelong benefits of a comprehensive health and fitness program.
Program Goals: The goal of the program is to target students who could use the benefits of a running or walking program – both to increase fitness and health, and in order to work on goal-setting and structured activity in their daily life. Running and walking are activities that are less intimidating that some organized sports, and are easy to participate in - just lace up your shoes and go!
Participation: For 2012, GO! St. Louis is partnering with seven St Louis area high schools: Gateway Central Visual & Performing Arts, University City High School, Roosevelt High School, Pattonville High School, Jennings High School, Metro High School and Block Yeshiva to complete the training program. Students and faculty follow a beginning training program designed by GO! St. Louis. They train with program coordinators and other school staff a few days a week after school, and then complete one weekly long run on Saturday in Forest Park. New this year is a journal not only for students to learn about health & fitness including running, nutrition, time management, stress management etc. but also for them to record their thoughts about goal setting, perseverance and accomplishments along their journey.
Incentives: Students and teachers involved in the program earn incentives for attendance that are also a benefit to their running & walking training. These include running shoes, running jacket, and a technical running shirt!
